ABSTRACT

Introducción: el cronotipo es la predisposición natural de cada individuo a experimentar picos de energía o momentos de descanso en función de su ritmo circadiano. Los individuos pueden tener cronotipos matutinos, vespertinos o intermedios, que pueden tener relación con el desarrollo de depresión. Objetivo: determinar la existencia de asociación entre el cronotipo y la sintomatología depresiva en una muestra de adultos. Metodología: este estudio observacional, descriptivo y exploratorio se realizó en agosto de 2023. Se incluyeron en este estudio adultos de ambos sexos. Se recolectaron datos sociodemográficos, y los participantes respondieron el Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire de Horne y Östberg para evaluar el cronotipo, y el Patient Health Questionnaire de 2 ítems (PHQ-2) para evaluar los síntomas depresivos. Se utilizaron estadísticas descriptivas para todas las variables. Para la estadística inferencial, se utilizó la prueba de chi-cuadrado con un nivel de confianza del 95 %. Se utilizó odds ratio para cuantificar las relaciones. Resultados: un total de 105 personas participaron en el estudio, de las cuales el 58 % eran mujeres. La edad media de la muestra era de 29,4 ± 11,6 años. El 69 % de la muestra presentaba el cronotipo matutino, mientras que el 31 % presentaba el cronotipo vespertino. Se observó que el 31 % de los participantes puntuaba positivamente para depresión (PHQ-2 ≥ 3). Se encontró una relación entre el cronotipo y los puntos de corte del PHQ-2 (p=0,036). Se halló una OR=2,5 (IC 95%: 1,05-5,95) a favor del cronotipo vespertino para el desarrollo de depresión. Conclusión: casi siete de cada diez participantes tenían un cronotipo matutino, mientras que tres de cada diez dieron positivo en depresión. Los individuos con cronotipos vespertinos son más propensos a desarrollar síntomas depresivos que aquellos con cronotipos matutinos.

Introducción: Debido a la alta prevalencia de obesidad a nivel mundial y nacional, y de la incidencia de esta enfermedad en el desarrollo de comorbilidades, estudiar los factores que contribuyan a su desarrollo resulta pertinente. La falta de sueño o el sueño interrumpido pueden estar asociados a la epidemia mundial de la obesidad, y resulta un factor modificable a incluir en su terapéutica. Objetivo: Conocer la evidencia reciente acerca de los mecanismos subyacentes que conforman una posible relación entre la cantidad y/o calidad de sueño con el desarrollo de obesidad en personas adultas Metodología: Revisión bibliográfica de artículos científicos en plataformas virtuales de bases de datos. Se aplicaron distintos filtros: edad (18 a 64 años), estudios realizados en humanos, texto completo, idioma inglés y español, y publicaciones no mayores a 5 años. Los estudios de evaluación de la calidad de sueño debían haber aplicado el Índice de Calidad de Sueño de Pittsburgh, y los de evaluación del cronotipo el Horne and Ostberg's Morningness - Eveningness Questionnaire o el Munich Chronotype Questionnaire . Resultados: Individuos con una insuficiente cantidad y/o calidad de sueño fueron asociados con una mayor probabilidad de desarrollar obesidad. Los principales mecanismos subyacentes encontrados fueron: alteraciones hormonales, metabólicas y un aumento de la ingesta de alimentos principalmente en la noche biológica. Conclusiones: Según la bibliografía seleccionada se concluye que existe evidencia que relaciona la cantidad y/o calidad de sueño con el posible desarrollo de obesidad en población adulta.


Introdução: Devido à alta prevalência da obesidade no mundo e no país e à incidência dessa doença no desenvolvimento de comorbidades, é relevante estudar os fatores que contribuem para o seu desenvolvimento. A falta de sono ou o sono interrompido pode estar associado à epidemia global de obesidade e é um fator modificável a ser incluído em sua terapia. Objetivo: Verificar as evidências recentes sobre os mecanismos subjacentes que compõem uma possível relação entre a quantidade e/ou a qualidade do sono e o desenvolvimento da obesidade em adultos . Metodologia: Revisão bibliográfica de artigos científicos em plataformas de bancos de dados virtuais. Foram aplicados diferentes filtros: idade (18 a 64 anos), estudos em humanos, texto completo, idioma inglês e espanhol e publicações com no máximo 5 anos. Os estudos que avaliaram a qualidade do sono deveriam ter aplicado o Índice de Qualidade do Sono de Pittsburgh, e os que avaliaram o cronotipo deveriam ter aplicado o Horne and Ostberg's Morningness - Eveningness Questionnaire ou o Munich Chronotype Questionnaire . Resultados: Os indivíduos com quantidade e/ou qualidade de sono insuficiente foram associados a uma maior probabilidade de desenvolver obesidade. Os principais mecanismos subjacentes encontrados foram: distúrbios hormonais, metabólicos e aumento da ingestão de alimentos, principalmente na noite biológica. Conclusões: Segundo a bibliografia selecionada, há evidências que relacionam a quantidade e/ou a qualidade do sono com o possível desenvolvimento de obesidade na população adulta


Introduction: As a result of the high prevalence of obesity worldwide and nationally, and because of the incidence of this disease in the development of comorbidities, studying the factors that contribute to its development is necessary. The lack or disrupted sleep that is affecting our civilization, has been associated with the worldwide epidemic of obesity, being a modifiable factor to include in its therapy. Objective: To find recent evidence about the underlying mechanisms that build a possible relationship between sleep duration and/or quality with the development of obesity in adults. Methods: The search of articles was carried out by using virtual platforms of bibliographic databases, which were filtered by: age (18 to 64 years), human studies, full text, English and Spanish language and publications no longer than 5 years. Studies that evaluated sleep quality had to apply the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and those that evaluated chronotype had to use the Horne and Ostberg's Morningness - Eveningness Questionnaire or the Munich Chronotype Questionnaire Results: Individuals with insufficient sleep duration and/or quality were more likely to become obese. Underlying mechanisms found were hormonal and metabolic alterations and an increase in food intake, mainly during the biological night Conclusions: According to the selected bibliography, there is scientific evidence linking sleep duration and/or quality with the possible development of obesity in adults

Sleep has attracted extensive attention due to its significance in health. However, its association with erectile dysfunction (ED) is insufficiently investigated. To investigate the potential causal links between sleep traits (insomnia, sleep duration, and chronotype) and ED, this study was performed. The single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with insomnia, sleep duration, and chronotype were retrieved from previous genome-wide association studies (GWAS). A conventional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) was used to estimate the causal links between sleep traits and ED. The summary statistics of ED were from individuals of European ancestry (6175 cases vs 217 630 controls). As shown by the random effect inverse-variance-weighting (IVW) estimator, genetically predicted insomnia was causally associated with a 1.15-fold risk of ED (95% confidence interval: 1.07-1.23, P < 0.001). Sleep duration and morningness were not causally associated with ED, as indicated by the IVW (all P > 0.05). These findings were consistent with the results of sensitivity analyses. Based on genetic data, this study provides causal evidence that genetically predicted insomnia increases the risk of ED, whereas sleep duration and chronotype do not.

ABSTRACT Background Sleep bruxism (BS) is defined as involuntary jaw movements characterized by grinding and clenching teeth. Objective To verify the association between chronotype, sleep quality, and self-reporting of BS in dental students. Method A cross-sectional study was conducted with 214 undergraduate dental students at a public university in northeast Brazil. The participants answered the Munich Chronotype Questionnaire for the identification of chronotype and another questionnaire regarding daily aspects to collect information about sleep quality, self-reported sleep bruxism, the use of sleeping pills, snoring, concentration during daily activities and energy upon waking. Results The prevalence of self-reported sleep bruxism was 11.0%. In the final model, the eveningness chronotype (OR = 23.00; 95% CI: 2.36-223.84, p = 0.007), habitual snoring (OR = 3.12; 95% CI: 1.31-7.39, p = 0.01) and low energy upon waking in the morning (OR = 2.37; 95% CI: 1.96-5.58, p = 0.040) were associated with self-reported sleep bruxism. Conclusion The evening chronotype, presence of snoring, and low energy when waking up in the morning influenced self-reporting of sleep bruxism among undergraduate dental students.


RESUMO Introdução O bruxismo do sono (BS) é definido como movimentos involuntários da mandíbula caracterizados por ranger e apertar os dentes. Objetivo Verificar se o cronotipo e a qualidade do sono estão associados ao autorrelato de BS em graduandos de Odontologia. Método Um estudo transversal com 214 estudantes de uma universidade pública do Nordeste do Brasil. Os participantes responderam ao Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire para identificar os cronotipos e outro questionário sobre aspectos diários em que foram coletadas informações sobre qualidade do sono, autorrelato de bruxismo do sono, uso de pílulas para dormir, ronco, concentração nas atividades diárias, energia ao acordar. Resultados A prevalência de autorrelato do bruxismo do sono foi de 11,0%. No modelo final, o cronotipo noturno (OR = 23,00; 95% IC: 2.36-223.84, p = 0,007), o hábito de roncar (OR = 3,12; 95% IC: 1.31-7.39, p = 0,01) e o baixo nível de energia ao acordar pela manhã (OR = 2,37; 95% IC: 1.96-5.58, p = 0,04) estiveram associados com o autorrelato de BS. Conclusão O cronotipo noturno, a presença do ronco e a baixa energia ao se levantar pela manhã influenciaram o autorrelato de bruxismo do sono entre os estudantes de graduação em Odontologia.

Abstract Introduction People with bipolar disorder are at a higher risk of metabolic morbidity and mortality. Chronotype may play a significant role due to its effect on sleep quality, eating patterns, and physical activity. Objective To compare sleep quality, social jetlag, physical activity, and diet, depending on the chronotype of people with bipolar disorder, and to determine the association between these variables. Method Cross-sectional, comparative, correlational study. The sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of subjects were assessed. Chronotype was determined using the Composite Scale of Morningness while sleep quality was evaluated through the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index. Social jet lag was calculated through the absolute difference between the midpoint of sleep on weekends and workdays. Physical activity was measured through the Bouchard Activity Record and diet was evaluated through a food frequency questionnaire. Comparative analyses were performed between chronotype categories and the association between variables was measured. Results 116 subjects were included. Subjects with evening chronotype reported poorer sleep quality than those with morning chronotype. Eveningness was associated with lower sleep quality scores and more hours of sleep on workdays, as well as with higher consumption of cold meats, calories, and sodium. Trends indicate greater social jet lag and low physical activity levels among evening chronotypes. Discussion and conclusion The effects of chronotype on study variables require further research to clarify this complex relationship and develop educational strategies to promote sleep hygiene, physical activity, and a healthy diet.


Resumen Introducción Las personas con trastorno bipolar corren mayor riesgo de presentar morbimortalidad metabólica. El cronotipo podría desempeñar un rol importante por su efecto sobre la calidad de sueño, los patrones de alimentación y la actividad física. Objetivo Comparar la calidad de sueño, el jet lag social, la actividad física y la dieta en función del cronotipo de personas con trastorno bipolar, así como determinar la asociación entre estas variables. Método Estudio transversal, comparativo y correlacional. Se evaluaron las características sociodemográficas y los antecedentes clínicos de los participantes. El cronotipo se determinó con la Escala Compuesta de Matutinidad y la calidad de sueño con el Índice de Calidad de Sueño Pittsburg. El jet lag social se calculó como la diferencia absoluta entre el punto medio de sueño en días libres y de trabajo. La actividad física se midió con el registro de Bouchard y la dieta con un cuestionario de frecuencia de consumo de alimentos. Se realizaron análisis comparativos entre categorías de cronotipo y se evaluó la asociación entre variables. Resultados Se incluyeron 116 participantes. Las personas de cronotipo vespertino reportaron menor calidad de sueño en comparación con las del cronotipo matutino. La vespertinidad se asoció a puntuaciones de menor calidad de sueño y más horas para dormir en días de trabajo, así como a mayor consumo de embutidos, calorías y sodio. Las tendencias indican mayor jet lag social y bajo nivel de actividad física entre cronotipos vespertinos. Discusión y conclusión Los efectos del cronotipo sobre las variables de estudio requieren más investigación, que aclare esta compleja relación, para desarrollar estrategias educativas de higiene de sueño, actividad física y dieta saludable.

ABSTRACT

Difference of chronotypes makes influence to cognitive performance of individuals in routine duties. In this paper, 55 subjects with different chronotypes were subjected to continuous sleep deprivation for 30 h by using the constant routine protocol, during which core body temperature was measured continuously, and subjective sleepiness self-rating and the performance of selective attention were measured hourly. The results showed that the phase difference of core body temperature has no significant difference, yet the amplitude and term difference among the three chronotypes are significant. There was an advance in phase between subjective sleepiness self-rating and core body temperature, and the self-rating sleepiness of evening type came the latest, and the self-rating sleepiness of morning type dissipated the fastest. The response time of selective attention showed a 2 h phase delay with subjective sleepiness self-rating. And the analysis of core body temperature showed that the later the chronotype was, the greater the phase delay was. The correct rate of selective attention of different chronotypes were inconsistent with delay of subjective sleepiness self-rating and core body temperature. We provide reference for industry, aviation, military, medical and other fields to make a more scientific scheduling/ shifting based on cognitive performance characteristics of different chronotypes.

RESUMEN Objetivo: Comparar el estado nutricional, cronotipo y conducta alimentaria que presenta un sujeto que posee simultáneamente los polimorfismos rs3749474T y rs4864548A con respecto a grupos de sujetos que poseen solo uno de dichos polimorfismos. Métodos: La presencia de los polimorfismos se determinó mediante PCR. Se determinó IMC, riesgo cardiovascular y porcentaje de grasa según lo descrito por Durnin y Womersley y la ecuación de Siri. Se aplicó el cuestionario TFEQ-P19 adaptado a población chilena y el cuestionario Horne-Ostberg. Resultados: El sujeto con ambos polimorfismos presentó obesidad, riesgo cardiovascular y cronotipo trasnochador. Sus puntajes en las dimensiones de alimentación sin control y alimentación emocional fueron bajos. Su puntaje en cuanto a la restricción cognitiva fue el más alto. Conclusiones: La presencia del haplotipo TA (rs3749474T; rs4864548A) aumentaría la posibilidad de tener un cronotipo de tipo de tipo trasnochador, riesgo de obesidad y riesgo cardiovascular asociado a los centímetros de cintura.


ABSTRACT Objective: To compare the nutritional status, chronotype and eating behavior of a subject who simultaneously has the rs3749474T and rs4864548A polymorphisms to groups of subjects who have only one of these polymorphisms. Methods: The presence of the polymorphisms was established by PCR. BMI, cardiovascular risk, and fat percentage were determined as described by Durnin and Womersley and the Siri equation. The TFEQ-P19 questionnaire (adapted to the Chilean population) and the Hor-ne-Ostberg questionnaire were applied. Results: The subject with both polymorphisms presented obesity, cardiovascular risk, and late-night chronotype. Its scores on the dimensions of uncontrolled feeding and emotional feeding were low, and its score for cognitive restriction was the highest. Conclusions: The presence of the TA haplotype (rs3749474; rs4864548A) would increase the possibility of having a late-night type chronotype, risk of obesity, and cardiovascular risk associated with waist centimeters.

ABSTRACT

O presente estudo analisou a relação entre cronotipo, níveis de ansiedade, depressão e estresse, bem como níveis de condicionamento cardiorrespiratório em jovens. Métodos: Foi analisado um total de 36 participantes com idades entre 18 e 28 a nos, saudáveis e que atendessem ao cronotipo matutino e vespertino. Análises de nível de atividade física, consumo máximo de oxigênio, níveis de depressão, ansiedade e estresse foram realizadas com testes específicos. Em todos os cálculos foram utilizados um alfa de p<0.05 para análise estatística. Resultados: O nível de atividade física mostrou que a porcentagem dos matutinos suficientemente ativos foi de 58% comparado com 23.5% dos vespertinos. Mulheres com cronotipo vespertino apresentaram níveis menores de VO2máx quando comparados com as mulheres com cronotipo matutino (p=0.04). Os participantes vespertinos apresentaram níveis maiores de ansiedade (p=0.02) comparados com os matutinos e esses dados foram evidentes nos participantes do sexo feminino onde as mulheres do cronotipo vespertino apresentaram níveis maiores de ansiedade (p=0.03) comparados com mulheres de cronotipo matutino. Conclusão: Portanto, o estudo conclui que indivíduos do cronotipo vespertino apresentaram menores níveis de atividade física e maiores níveis de ansiedade evidenciados principalmente nas mulheres.(AU)


The present study analyzed a relationship between schedule, anxiety, depression and stress levels, as well as cardiorespiratory fitness levels in young people. Methods: A total of 36 healthy participants aged 18 to 28 years who met the criteria for chronotypes morning type and evening type were analyzed. Analyzes of physical activity level, maximal oxygen uptake, depression, anxiety and stress levels were performed. In all calculations, an alpha of p <0.05 was used for statistical analysis. Results: The level of physical activity was higher in morning types 58% compared to 23.5% of evening types. Women with evening chronotype had lower VO2max levels compared with women with a morning chronotype (p= 0.04). Evening types had higher anxiety levels (p= 0.02) compared to morning types and these data were evidenced in female participants with higher anxiety levels (p=0.03) compared to women with a morning chronotype. Conclusion: Therefore, the study concludes that young people with a evening chronotype exhibited lower levels of physical activity and higher anxiety levels, especially in women.(AU)

Resumen Introducción: La vida cambiante de los universitarios proporciona modificaciones en sus estilos de vida, esto influye en aspectos de salud, al igual que en la relación entre vigilia y sueño por sus actividades académicas, lo que denota una necesidad de ser estudiada, para orientar acciones de prevención de enfermedades a futuro. Objetivo: Identificar la asociación entre los estilos de vida y el cronotipo de estudiantes universitarios en Popayán-Colombia. Métodos: Estudio cuantitativo de tipo descriptivo correlacional de cohorte transversal, realizado en la ciudad de Popayán-Colombia en una Institución de Educación Superior durante el II periodo de 2017 y I del 2018, con una población de 342 universitarios, quienes cumplieron los criterios de inclusión como estar matriculados durante los periodos establecidos, asistir a las evaluaciones y firmar el consentimiento informado. Mediciones principales: Variables antropométricas (peso y talla corporal, perímetro de cintura), presión arterial, cuestionario de estilos de vida PEPS-I, y cuestionario de Matutinidad-Vespertinidad De Horne y Östberg. Resultados: Se evidenció moderada asociación entre los estilos de vida y el cronotipo de los estudiantes (r=0,593; p=0,000), no obstante, la edad y el sexo son variables claves para asociaciones altas para IMC (r=0,938; p=0,004) y perímetro de cintura (r=0858; p=0,000). Conclusión: Los estilos de vida inciden en el cronotipo de los estudiantes, planteándose la necesidad de generar campañas de prevención como de promoción de la salud en esta población.


Abstract Introduction: The changing life of university students provides changes in their lifestyles, which influences health aspects, as well as the relationship between wakefulness and sleep due to their academic activities, which denotes a need to be studied, to guide actions of Disease prevention in the future. Objective: To identify the association between lifestyles and the chronotype of university students in Popayán-Colombia. Methods: Quantitative descriptive correlational study of a transversal cohort, conducted in the city of Popayán-Colombia in a Higher Education Institution during the II period of 2017 and I of 2018, with a population of 342 university students, who met the inclusion criteria how to be enrolled during the established periods, attend the evaluations and sign the informed consent. Main measurements: Anthropometric variables (body weight and height, waist circumference), blood pressure, PEPS-I lifestyle questionnaire, and Horne Y Östberg Maturity-Vespertinity questionnaire. Results: There was a moderate association between the lifestyles and the chronotype of the students (r = 0.593; p = 0.000), however, age and sex are key variables for high associations for BMI (r = 0.938; p = 0.004) and waist circumference (r = 0858; p = 0.000). Conclusions: The lifestyles affect the chronotype of the students, considering the need to generate prevention campaigns as well as health promotion in this population.

ABSTRACT

The sleep-wake cycle that is circadian rhythm may have different patterns according to sex, environment and genetics determinants. This chronological cycle type, chronotype, may be populational expressed by the extremes, early or later going to bed and waking up, in a continuum. The first, the Morning-type individuals (the lark) and the later, the Evening types (the owl). Between the two extremes, there is the majority of these chronotypes ­ the intermediate ones. These patterns may be classified according to the questionnaires such as Horne and Ostberg Morningness/ Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) and the Munich Chrono Type Questionnaire (MCTQ). The rural population tends to be Morning-type, as well as children and younger women, more than men. The Morning person tends to be more healthy than the Evening ones who are more prone to diseases, as depression and metabolic syndrome. This basic knowledge may be helpful to patient's counseling and management: to avoid mismatch of circadian physiology and social duties / sleep. This circadian desynchrony can increase the risk of diseases, consequently there is a need to chrono-medicine into current treatment strategies.


O ciclo sono-vigília, que é um ritmo circadiano, pode ter padrões diferentes de acordo com os determinantes sexuais, ambientais e genéticos. Esse tipo de ciclo cronológico, cronótipo, pode ser expresso em termos populacionais pelos extremos, indo cedo ou mais tarde para a cama ou saindo dela, em um continuum. O primeiro, os indivíduos do tipo Manhã (a cotovia) e o posterior, os tipos da Tarde (a coruja). Entre os dois extremos, há a maioria desses cronotipos - os intermediários. Esses padrões podem ser classificados de acordo com questionários como o Horne e Ostberg Morningness/Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) e o Munich Chrono Type Questionnaire (MCTQ). A população rural tende a ser do tipo matutino, assim como crianças e mulheres mais jovens, mais que os homens.A pessoa da manhã tende a ser mais saudável do que as da noite, mais propensa a doenças, como depressão e síndrome metabólica. Esse conhecimento básico pode ser útil para o aconselhamento e tratamento dos pacientes: para evitar incompatibilidade entre a fisiologia circadiana e os deveres sociais / sono. Essa dessincronia circadiana pode aumentar o risco de doenças, consequentemente, é necessário a cronomedicina nas atuais estratégias de tratamento.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Circadian dysregulation plays an important role in the etiology of mood disorders. Evening chronotype is frequent in these patients. However, prospective studies about the influence of chronotype on mood symptoms have reached unclear conclusions in patients with bipolar disorder (BD). The objective of this study was to investigate relationship between chronotype and prognostic factors for BD. Methods: At the baseline, 80 euthymic BD patients answered a demographic questionnaire and clinical scales to evaluate anxiety, functioning and chronotype. Circadian preference was measured using the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire, in which lower scores indicate eveningness. Mood episodes and hospitalizations were evaluated monthly for 18 months. Results: Among the BD patients, 14 (17.5%) were definitely morning type, 35 (43.8%), moderately morning, 27 (33.7%) intermediate (neither) and 4 (5%) moderately evening. Eveningness was associated with obesity or overweight (p = 0.03), greater anxiety (p = 0.002) and better functioning (p = 0.01), as well as with mood episodes (p = 0.04), but not with psychiatric hospitalizations (p = 0.82). This group tended toward depressive episodes (p = 0.06), but not (hypo)mania (p = 0.56). Conclusion: This study indicated that evening chronotype predicts a poor prognostic for BD. It reinforces the relevance of treating rhythm disruptions even during euthymia to improve patient quality of life and prevent mood episodes.

ABSTRACT

In mammals, the circadian rhythms have been shown to regulate several physiological functions, including body temperature, sleep-wake behavior, physical activity, hormonal secretions, and metabolism. These processes are controlled by circadian clock genes, and abnormal circadian rhythms are associated with the development of obesity, diabetes, and lifestyle-related diseases. In addition, the timing of behaviors such as food intake, exercise, and stress influence circadian rhythms, including clock gene expression in peripheral tissues. Therefore, the interaction between nutrition and the circadian clock is so-called “chrono-nutrition” is poised to become an important research field of chronobiology. In this review, we review the effects of a timed-nutrition on circadian clocks and their timing-dependent effects on physiological functions.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate association between presence of time preference of headache attack and social jetlag and circadian preference in patients with migraine with or without aura. METHODS: A total of 50 patients of migraine with or without aura who visited for the first time at a single tertiary medical center were examined and interviewed about their sleep pattern on weekdays and weekends and whether they have time preference of headache attack during a day or not. Frequency of headache and measurement for disability of headache such as six-item Headache Impact Test and other sleep profiles such as sleep duration, sleep quality, daytime sleepiness, and insomnia severity were obtained by a booklet of questionnaire. RESULTS: In this pilot study, the time preference of migraine attack during a day was present in 42% among the participants. In the cross-sectional analysis, the group of presence of time preference of attack showed earlier circadian preference (1:36 am±282 min vs. 4:24 am±186 min, p=0.02) and lower social jetlag than the other group (0.4±0.8 hour vs. 1.4±2.2 hour, p=0.04). Other demographic characteristics and frequency and severity of headache was comparable between groups. CONCLUSIONS: Considering an individual circadian preference might be a strategy in integrated management of migraine.

ABSTRACT

Chronotype (CT) is defined as an inter-individual difference in sleep-wake cycles and daily activities. Previous studies have suggested that this individual difference can influence our biological and psychological functioning. Literature regarding the psychometric properties and validity of CT measures are reviewed. We provide an overview of biological indicators (sleep-wake cycle, body temperature, cortisol, and melatonin) that are used for distinguishing two chronotypes: morningness (MT) and eveningness (ET). We also review the differences between CT in relation to personality traits and the occurrence of psychopathology. In addition, the methodological limitations of studies on CT are discussed. Finally, future research directions in terms of CT are proposed.

Resumo O presente estudo teve o objetivo de verificar os efeitos comportamentais do sono nos traços de personalidade de adultos jovens. Participaram desta pesquisa 114 voluntários entre 18 e 40 anos de idade. Os sujeitos foram divididos em três grupos: Moderadamente Matutino (n = 23); Intermediário (n = 52) e Moderadamente Vespertino (n = 39). Entre os instrumentos de pesquisa utilizou-se o Questionário de Matutinidade e Vespertinidade de Horne e Östberg e Inventário dos Cinco Grandes Fatores de Personalidade. A MANOVA mostrou diferença significativa entre os cronotipos e os traços de personalidade [λ = 0,78; F(10,198) = 2,52; p < 0,05; η2 = 0,11]. Observou-se diferença significativa apenas para os traços de extroversão [F(2,103) = 3,65; p < 0,05; η2 = 0,06] e amabilidade [F(2,103) = 8,03; p < 0,05; η2 = 0,14]. Este estudo sugere que pessoas com diferentes traços de personalidades possuem horas específicas para realizar suas atividades e que existe uma relação com o padrão do cronotipo. Em geral, os dados indicam que homens e mulheres apresentam traços de personalidade diferentes em relação aos efeitos comportamentais do sono.

El estúdio recogió 114 voluntarios de entre 18 y 40 años de edad. Los sujetos fueron divididos entres grupos: Moderadamente mañana (n = 23); Intermedio (n = 52) y moderadamente Vespertino (n = 39). Entre el instrumento de estudio utilizado el Cuestionario matutinidad y vespertinidad Horne y Östberg y el Inventario de los cinco grandes factores. MANOVA mostró una diferencia significativa entre el cronotipo y rasgos de personalidad [λ = 0.78; F(10.198) = 2.52; p <.05; η2 = 0.11]. Los resultados mostraron una diferencia significativa en la extraversión [F(2.103) = 3.65; p < .05; η2 = 0.06] y rasgos de bondad [F(2.103) = 8.03; p < .05; η2 = 0.14]. La investigación sugiere que entre estos sujetos, diferentes rasgos de personalidad pueden influir en la preferencia por ciertos períodos del día para llevar a cabo las actividades diarias y que existe una relación con el cronotipo estándar. Además, los resultados indican que hombres y mujeres tienen diferentes rasgos de personalidad cuando se comprueban los efectos del comportamiento del sueño.


Abstract This study aimed to investigate the behavioral effects of sleep on the personality traits of young adults. The sample consisted of 114 volunteers with ages between 18 and 40. The subjects were characterized into three groups according to Horne and Östberg (1975): Moderately Morning (n = 23); intermediary (n = 52) and Moderately Evening (n = 39). The Horne and Östberg Morningness and Eveningness questionnaire and the Big five Personality Inventory were used for data collection. MANOVA showed a significant difference between the chronotype and personality traits [λ = 0.78; F(10.198) = 2.52; p < .05; η2 = 0.11]. The results showed a significant difference on extraversion [F(2.103) = 3.65; p < .05; η2 = 0.06] and kindness traits [F(2.103) = 8.03; p < .05; η2 = 0.14]. The investigation suggests that among these subjects, different personality traits may influence preference for certain periods of the day to carry out daily activities and that there is a relationship with the standard chronotype. Also, the results indicate that men and women have different personality traits when the effects of the sleep behavior are checked.

BACKGROUND@#The study aimed to explore whether sugary beverage consumption is a key mediator of late chronotype, sleep duration, and weight increase in college students in China.@*METHODS@#The cross-sectional study was conducted in four universities using a sample of 800 undergraduate students recruited by cluster sampling. A self-reported questionnaire was given out to collect information, including the characteristic of social demography, state of physical exercise and sugary beverage intake, the types of chronotype, and psychological conditions. Then, two structural equation models (SEMs) were constructed to test the mediating effect of sugary beverage consumption.@*RESULTS@#The significant indirect effect of sugary beverage consumption was found between chronotype and BMI (effect = - 0.03, SE = 0.01, 95% CI [- 0.05, - 0.02]) and between sleep duration and BMI (effect = - 0.12, SE = 0.05, 95% CI [- 0.16, - 0.09]). In addition, physical exercise and psychological condition also play mediating effects between chronotype and BMI (effect = - 0.04, SE = 0.01, 95% CI [- 0.06, - 0.01] and effect = - 0.03, SE = 0.02, 95% CI [- 0.05, - 0.01]), but their mediating effect was not found between sleep duration and BMI.@*CONCLUSION@#Preventive measures should be taken to decrease student's sugary beverage consumption, improve physical exercise, and increase individual well-being to avoid the harmful effects of eveningness. Moreover, the issue of short sleep duration among college students may be further investigated in future research.

Objective: To assess the interaction of chronotype with anxiety in patients with chronic primary insomnia. Methods: Sixty-four patients (50 women) with mean age 43.9±8.1 years were investigated with the Horne and Östberg Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Results: Significant negative correlations of chronotype-MEQ score with STAI state-anxiety (r = -0.40, p < 0.05), STAI trait-anxiety (r = -0.40, p < 0.05), and STAI pre-sleep state anxiety (r = -0.30, p < 0.05) were observed. Eveningness preference was associated with higher trait, state, and pre-sleep state anxiety. Conclusions: These results suggest that chronotype may be an important parameter to identifying the origin and significance of a vicious anxiety-insomnia-depression cycle in patients with chronic primary insomnia.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Suicide is one of the leading causes of death among young adults. We investigated whether anxiety level and sleep quality were related to suicide ideation among university students. METHODS: Questionnaires were distributed to 1094 students at a local college. The scale for suicide Ideation, the Hospital Anxiety-Depression scale, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and Morningness-eveningness questionnaires were used. Multiple linear regression analysis was conducted to examine the relationship between these variables and suicide ideation. RESULTS: Among the 292 students who answered the suicide ideation questionnaire, 31 students had a high suicide ideation score and 261 patients had a low suicide ideation score. Demographic variables that showed significant differences between the two groups were gender, exercise, chronotype, sleep quality, depression and anxiety. The results of multiple linear regression analysis showed that suicidal ideation increased as the level of sleep quality decreased. There was no significant relationship between depression and suicidal ideation. Another multiple linear regression analysis was performed to evaluate the relationship between sleep quality sleep related factors. This suggested the quality of sleep decreased as weekend oversleep increased. CONCLUSION: The results of this study showed that when anxiety was higher and the quality of sleep was lower, the more suicide ideation increased. Therefore, improving sleep quality and reducing anxiety are important strategies for reducing suicidal ideation.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate sleep-wake patterns and chronotype in rapidly rotating shift nurses (SRN). METHODS: We translated and back-translated the Korean Munich ChronoType for Shift-Workers (K-MCTQ(shift)) with original authors' permission. In this study, 353 full-time, SRN (age 28.7±3.95 years 341 females, mean shift–working duration=5 years 9 months) at one university hospital completed the K-MCTQ(shift) and the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ). Time in bed, sleep duration, and mid-sleep time (sleep onset time+1/2 sleep duration) were evaluated on work days and free days. Social jet lag was computed for each shift. Chronotype was assessed based on the mid-sleep time on free days corrected for sleep debt accumulated over the workweek (MSF(SC)). RESULTS: Sleep duration on workdays were 5.2 hours (day shift, D), 7.7 hours (evening shift, E), and 5.7 hours (night shift, N), respectively. Alarm clock usage on workdays was the highest in day-shifts (92.4%). The chronotype of 166 SRN who did not use alarm on free days was 6:09 h. Social jet lag was the longest in day-shifts (3.3 hours), and the shortest in evening-shifts (0.3 hour). Mid-sleep after the evening-shift (MSW(E), MSF(E), MSF(E)(SC)) showed significant correlations with MEQ scores. CONCLUSIONS: The Korean MCTQ(shift) provides actual sleep-wake patterns per shift schedule and chronotype in shift workers. We suggest that the sleep-corrected version of mid-sleep on free days after evening shifts (MSF(E)(SC)) is suitable for assessing chronotype in shift workers.
